Quarterback Kyle Orton sat out the second half of the Denver
Broncos' 27-17 loss to the Washington Redskins on Sunday with an
injured left ankle and was unsure whether he'll be able to play
next week.
Orton came up hobbling after being tackled on a third-down
scramble right before halftime. He was on the sideline during
the second half, his ankle heavily taped.
"I was hoping to come back out, and I just wasn't able to," said
Orton, who was 11 for 18 for 193 yards and two long touchdown
passes to Brandon Marshall.
Orton said he tried a few practice throws coming out of
halftime, but then told coach Josh McDaniels he wouldn't be able
to play. Orton said after the game it was too soon to say
whether he would be able to play against the San Diego Chargers
next Sunday.
"I'm not going to sit here and talk about it," he said.
Miami running back Ronnie Brown was also uncertain of his status
after injuring his right ankle in the third quarter of the
Dolphins' 25-23 victory against Tampa Bay.
Brown, on crutches after the game, limped off the field assisted
by teammates and later hobbled to the locker room, where he
watched the end of his team's win.
"We took X-rays. We'll wait to see what happens," Brown said. "I
don't think it's too bad."
Brown was hurt on a running play that ended with his lost
fumble.
"I kind of rolled my foot to the inside," he said. "It's tough
coming out of the game. Fortunately we were able to get a W. I
just don't like being on the sidelines."
Brown finished with 82 yards rushing and a touchdown. His
absence meant a busier load for Ricky Williams, who ran for a
season-high 102 yards.
Philadelphia running back Brian Westbrook left the Eagles' 31-23
loss at San Diego after another concussion. His last carry was
during the opening drive of the second half.
Westbrook missed the previous two games with a concussion.
Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu reinjured his left knee early in
the Steelers' 18-12 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
After the game, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Polamalu was
undergoing an MRI exam. Polamalu missed four games earlier with
a torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee before
returning Oct. 18 against Cleveland.
He apparently was injured tackling Cedric Benson during
Cincinnati's opening possession. Polamalu was seen flexing his
knee after coming off the field, and he left for the locker room
shortly after that.
Benson, the Bengals' rushing leader, was pulled during the
second quarter with an unspecified hip injury, returned for one
series, then left the game.
He was replaced by Bernard Scott in the second quarter during a
drive in which Cincinnati went three and out, not long after
Scott scored on a 96-yard kickoff return. Benson came back for
the next series just before halftime.
After the break, the Bengals announced he was not expected to
return. Benson finished with 22 yards on seven carries.
Atlanta lost running back Michael Turner to a sprained right
ankle in the second quarter of a 28-19 loss to the Carolina
Panthers. Turner rolled the ankle when he was tackled at the end
of a 10-yard run that gave him 111 yards on just nine carries.
He took off his shoe and walked around before heading inside.
Coach Mike Smith said Turner will undergo tests Monday to
determine if he'll be out an extended period.
"I think we'll have a lot better idea when we get him back to
Atlanta," Smith said.
Carolina lost left tackle Jordan Gross to a broken right ankle
midway through the second quarter. Gross was blocking when a
Falcons player fell into his leg, which bent awkwardly.
Jacksonville wide receiver Jarrett Dillard broke his right ankle
after a 7-yard catch on the first play of the second quarter in
the Jaguars' 24-22 win over the New York Jets. Coach Jack Del
Rio said it was a season-ending injury.
Safety Rashean Mathis strained a leg midway through the fourth
quarter, and Del Rio said he would be evaluated Monday.
Jets safety Jim Leonhard left briefly after injuring his right
thumb on Maurice Jones-Drew's 33-yard touchdown run in the first
quarter. He came back in the second quarter with the hand
heavily wrapped, and said after the game he wasn't sure as to
the severity of the injury. Leonhard was unable to field punts
because of it, replaced by Darrelle Revis.
Detroit lost right guard Stephen Peterman to a leg injury in the
third quarter of a 27-10 loss to Minnesota.
Also, Marquand Manuel, starting at safety after Louis Delams was
held out due to an infected tooth and jaw, left earlier in the
third quarter with a shoulder injury. Cornerback Jack Williams
hurt his knee on the same play.
Cowboys starting right tackle Marc Colombo broke his left leg in
the first quarter of Dallas' 17-7 loss at Green Bay.
Colombo was injured on the first play of Dallas' second drive,
blocking for running back Marion Barber when Packers defensive
tackle Johnny Jolly rolled up on the back of Colombo's leg. He
was immediately taken for X-rays and the team announced early in
the second quarter he had a broken left fibula.
